Looking after your watch

  • Keep it away from strong magnets where you can, and avoid knocks and impacts, especially with a mechanical watch.
  • If your watch has a date, set the hands to around 6 o’clock before changing it. Avoid using the quick-set date between roughly 9pm and 3am.
  • An automatic watch may stop if it is left unworn. That is normal; it can usually be wound and the time reset before you wear it again.
  • Wipe the case and bracelet gently with a soft microfibre cloth. Keep leather straps away from water.
  • Vintage watches deserve a little extra care: be gentle with the crown, and keep them clear of moisture and hard knocks.

A note on water: Seals age, so an original water-resistance rating does not tell you what a pre-owned watch can withstand today. Only rely on water resistance if your individual watch has been recently pressure tested. If in doubt, keep it away from water.
